A moderate ascent into the Northern Olympic subalpine

Overview

Heather Park is one of the most accessible moderate day hikes from Port Angeles and leads you into the subalpine up to Klahhane Ridge the old-fashioned way— with a pair of hiking boots! Compared to driving to the top of Hurricane Ridge, the Heather Park trail’s 4,000 foot gain over 5 miles makes you earn your mountainous viewpoints, typically keeping the path less crowded than the Visitor Center Trails. The Heart of the Hills Trailhead for Heather Park and Lake Angeles is only a 20-minute drive from Port Angeles, located 5 miles up Hurricane Ridge road before the entrance fee station. For an experienced and ambitious day-hiker or for an overnight backpacking loop, Heather Park is part of the 12.5 mile Klahhane Ridge loop, which links up with the 3.7 mile Lake Angeles trail. As you quickly gain elevation on this trail, ascending over 5,000 feet, snow and route finding is a major trip planning consideration, especially December 1 - April 30.
